Bernd was the best boss I ever had. I was Bernd’s secretary when he was editor of Physical Review A. He once remarked “they’re paying you a pittance” and then promptly raised my salary. He reviewed papers daily and I remember one person repeatedly submitted poems which Bernd read and appreciated (but did not publish). Once for some reason, we were looking at a photo of Michaelangelo’s David and he quipped “It’s anatomically incorrect”, thus voicing, no doubt, a universal observation. Another time he showed me a letter of submission from a Latin American author, it was signed in Spanish “I kiss your feet”. Just a few memories of a delightful boss and friend. Although a highly intelligent man, his intelligence didn’t dominate him. A wonderful, unique mix of brains, wit and kindness with an appreciation of life.
